The Deed With My Name On It

He tells it in one sentence and he tells it well, and he has told it for thirty-one years.

He was twenty-six and he was in the river, and he does not go into how, and everybody who knows him knows not to ask about that part. And a man went in after him who had no business going in after him, and got him to the bank, and that is the story, and Cal will tell you that God saved his life on a Saturday in June and he means it in both senses.

He has told that in about four different churches over thirty-one years and it lands every time, and it is true.

Here is what he has never once said, in any of those tellings, because it has never once occurred to him: what happened afterward.

Because in his mind, and he could not have told you this until somebody pointed it out, the story ends on the bank. He was in the water and now he is out of the water. That is salvation, and he has been grateful for it every day for thirty-one years, and he is not complaining about anything.

But if you asked Cal what he was saved into, he would go quiet, and then he would probably say something about heaven, in the future tense, and then he would look uncomfortable and change the subject to the fence.

He is fifty-seven and he does not know he is an heir. Nobody has ever read him the second half of the verse.

If you can tell the rescue in one sentence, here is the question. Has anybody ever read you what comes after it?

Paul puts the second half in the same sentence

And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ.Romans 8:17

Read the escalation, because it happens twice inside eight words.

If children, then heirs. The first move is from a status to a stake. Being a child is a relationship. Being an heir is a legal position with property attached, and Paul says the second follows automatically from the first. There is no additional qualification and no further step; if the first is true then the second is.

Heirs of God. Not heirs of a benefit or a blessing or a place. Of God. The estate in question is His.

And joint-heirs with Christ. And then the second escalation, and this is the one that undoes a man on a bank. Joint-heir means holding the same inheritance together, not a portion set aside for the lesser party. Whatever belongs to Christ as Son is what Cal is a joint-heir of.

You are an heir of God and a joint-heir with Christ, and it is already the position that follows from being a child, and there is no further step between the two. I am not enlarging a man's testimony for him. It is written in Romans 8:17, and the Holy Spirit is the one who reads a second half to a man who has only ever been told the first.

Why the rescue story stops on the bank

And here is the reason this happens to good men, and it is worth naming because it is not anybody's fault exactly.

A rescue is dramatic and an inheritance is not. The rescue has a river in it. The inheritance is a document on a table and the fact that a piece of ground is now yours, which does not preach, and which nobody stands up in a meeting to describe.

So the story that gets told is the water. And a man tells the water for thirty-one years and the water becomes the whole of what he thinks happened to him, and the deed sits on the table under a stone with nobody reading it out.

That is not a small loss. A rescued man who does not know he is an heir lives like a man who is grateful and has nothing, and that is exactly how Cal has lived: grateful, careful, and quietly assuming that everything good is somebody else's.

You have property and standing and not only a rescue, and it was already yours from the moment the first thing was true. Scripture says the Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit that we are the children of God, and if children then heirs, and the Holy Spirit is the one who bears that witness in a man on a porch.

What an heir does differently

And this is practical, because Cal will want to know what changes on Monday.

An heir speaks about the estate as though it concerns him, because it does. He does not ask permission to be interested in it. He is not a guest on it and he does not apologize for walking on it, and when something on it needs doing he does it as an owner rather than as a man being useful in somebody else's business.

Thirty-one years of Cal being useful in what he takes to be somebody else's business.

The change is not that he starts claiming things. It is that he stops standing at the edge of a thing that has his name on the paperwork.

You are able to act as an owner rather than as a rescued guest, and the name is already on the document. It is written that we are heirs of God and joint-heirs with Christ, and the Holy Spirit is the one who moves a man from the bank to the table.
